Sanity Rule #4: Wake up Call! The Rules Have Changed!
Do you ever get the feeling that you have a different rule book for parenting than your kid?... Sort of like the one that you used to use worked and slowly it no longer works? And now your teen has new rules and you didn't realize it all changed? Welcome to the world of parenting teens and older children!
Here is a poem that I wrote to capture the essence of this new state:
The Totally Connected "Screenagers" by Anne Jolles
We live together in our home in different cultures...
I can't use the multiple remote controls alone...
How does a fax travel through the phone?
My digital camera is a mystery.
Letter writing and stamps are surely history.
YOU plug into cell phone, beeper, Internet , MP3.
IM, CD ROM, Fax and MTV.
Profile page, chat rooms, and all that junk food.
iPod, blogs, text message and snood.
Instant this and instant that.
Fast and furious instant chat.
Why wait? Go for instant gratification.
Now, now, now... what happened to contemplation?
The world is your playground.
Your neighborhood is surround sound.
Good, creative and bad right there for you.
Childhood cut short...evil hunting for you.
Sanity Rule #4 is a Wake Up Call to all the unsuspecting parents who think the rules are the same... they are not. I don't give advice... I share new perspectives to help parents of teens be more resilient, and ready for these challenges... then you have more possibility of not just surviving but thriving during and after raising your teens and young adults.
I bring a light touch to some heavy subjects...
Sending my best,
Anne
